How long have you been in the industry?
I have been in the Mobile Electronics industry for nine years (and counting). My first year was spent in sales; the past eight were spent mostly in the install bay. Although sales was not my favorite area, I used it as a stepping stone to get where I wanted to be; the install bay.
How many years have you been MECP certified? How long have you been Master certified?
I first attained Basic Installer Certification in 2002. Later that year, I attained my First Class Installer Certification (now Advanced Installer). In 2003, I achieved Security Specialist. In 2004, I accomplished the goal of becoming MECP Master Installer. I renewed my Master Installer Certification in 2008 with another passing score on the exam.
What is the year, make and model of the most difficult car you've ever worked on?
I don't believe I can pinpoint it to one car, truck, SUV, or even boat. All vehicles present different challenges. That's the fun in being an installer; everyday is different with different challenges thrown at you. The one area that presents a challenge often is having a new vehicle in the bay prior to any tech info available for it. Although it may be a couple stressful hours, the completed job is always well worth the effort put in. My only complaint is when these vehicles show up on a busy day.
Give us a rundown of the system installed in your vehicle right now.
I have an OEM head unit and speakers. It plays CD's... I'm content. Oh wait... I have the Viper Responder HD and Xpresskit DLPK in my '06 Nissan Xterra.
Name the top five artists in your MP3 player at the moment.
At the moment... I would say (in no particular order), Atmosphere, Grouch, Pozeser, Del (Tha Funky Homosapien), and… Eligh. It more depends on what mood I'm in at the time. Next week, it'll most likely be completely different.
What is your favorite tool to use in the installation bay and why?
My favorite tool in my installation bay is my installation team. All of my installers are not just good techs, but they're great people. The two traits do not often go hand-in-hand. I have worked with many good people that did not have the knack for being an installer, as well as awesome installers with difficult personalities. I am fortunate to have the staff that I do. They are a great contribution to the smooth running of our operation as well as our overall success. There is no better tool.
What's the best advice you have ever gotten in your installation career?
I cannot recall advice that I've gotten, but I would like to share some. Always help an installer when they're in need of assistance (or any person for that matter). In some cases, this includes your competition down the street. You would be helping the industry move forward more than helping your competitor. You will receive their assistance in return if ever needed. Most importantly, take pride in knowing your knowledge saved someone countless hours of wasted time. There's no better feeling than knowing you're the go-to guy when someone needs help.
Who inspires you to further your skills and your career in mobile electronics installation?
This would be the same person that inspires me in everyday life; my best friend, my wife.
